Open Screenplay Commemorates International Women’s Day with Female-Led Film Production

Mar 07, 2021

TORONTO, March 8, 2021 – Open Screenplay is continuing its commitment to enabling female storytellers and filmmakers with an announcement of a film production featuring a female screenwriter, female director, a female owned and operated production company, and a female led cast.

The rapidly growing online screenwriting platform and marketplace, known for creating opportunities for emerging voices in screenwriting and for its focus on inclusion and diversity, has teamed up with award-winning and oscar-nominated director, Sarah Gross, to direct the period horror short film.  The project is based on the winning screenplay of Open Screenplay’s inaugural screenwriting contest, penned by Maddison Tebbut, a law student and up and coming screenwriter from Halifax,NS.

Coming of the heels of their successful first short film production, titled “The Poem” which has already won Best International Indie at the Venice Shorts Film Festival and is gaining momentum in the festival circuit, Open Screenplay hired a female-owned production company, Freckles Productions, to produce the film with the predominantly female cast. Kin promises to showcase the quality and creativity of Open Screenplay’s writing community, and produce works with female-centric narratives.

In describing the significance of the project, Open Screenplay Founder & CEO, Khaled Sabawi, said: “We are excited to see the incredible results that come out when we level the playing field, remove barriers, and grant opportunities to new creative voices in screenwriting and filmmaking.  This is especially true for female screenwriters and filmmakers who are  underrepresented in the industry by a ratio of 5:1! We are proud to have created a platform where such opportunities are possible.”

KIN is scheduled to start shooting in Los Angeles, California on March 23rd.
